FLASH MOB presents: NIGHT SLUGS, Bok Bok & Girl Unit
Sat 26th Oct @ 11pm - 3am £6.00 / £8.00 / £10.00
For our October event we are thrilled to bring you Night Slug’s very own Bok Bok and Girl Unit. Two DJ’s we’ve been planning on booking since well before Flash Mob was brought into existence. To us, Night Slugs represented thesound that was somewhere between house, grime, techno and hip hop long before it became common to see a DJ mix all of them together in the same set. We’re VERY excited to finally have them both playing in Glasgow after a long absence and this promises to be well worth the wait.
Bok Bok aka Alex Sushon is a London based DJ, producer, remixer and director of the incendiary Night Slugs record label.
DJing since 2004, Sushon started to make his name on London’s underground scene around the time Grime music was first emerging from the capitol’s tower blocks, and for the first years of his career he played little else. The unique inventiveness and raw energy of that music has remained with Sushon ever since those early days, as he discovered the wider world of club music, seeing many parallels between the homegrown music of London and House music from Chicago to South Africa, Techno, Baltimore/Jersey/Philly Club, 80s funk and a myriad other music styles across many eras. For Sushon, all these musics came together to form a seamless timeline, all complimenting, echoging and supplementing each other.
A bedroom producer since the early 2000s, Girl Unit started putting out mixes as Girl U No Its True in 2006, consisting largely of Miami Bass/Ghettotech/Ghetto House tracks, getting his first taste of club shows at some of the early Night Slugs events in London.
A firm believer in the term “Club” as a unifying term for the kind of sound provided, searching to draw connections from classic 808/909 rhythm tracks and club tools through to ice Rap/Grime/R&B instrumentals via US club tracks and more purpose-built material from the Night Slugs label.
2013 brings his side project Hysterics to the fray, with various tunes doing the dubplate circuit and primed for release.
The name Night Slugs first came into existence in early 2008 when, inspired by a variety of experimental club music from around the globe, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 linked up to start a club night dedicated to a brand new hybrid sound. This new aesthetic fused international gutter house styles with London’s unique soundsystem heritage. The emphasis was on innovation, breaking new producers, debuting fresh tracks, uncompromising bass weight, and above all a functionalist dancefloor-friendly vibe.
Support on the night comes from Vandelay.
